Different Types of Heels

Pumps

Pumps are a staple in any well-rounded wardrobe. Known for a simple and clean silhouette, pumps are probably what you picture when you think of a "high heel." The low-cut front and closed toe have a chic aesthetic, perfect for sexy going out outfits, formal events, and professional settings. Did someone say versatile? Whether you find a sleek black leather or modern sparkly shoe, pumps are a symbol of elegance.

Kitten Heels

You might find kitten heels to be a more comfortable, practical option over pumps. The defining characteristic of a kitten heel is its modest stiletto height, typically 1.5 to 2 inches high. The slender, short heels were massively popular in the 1960s for their comfortable, cute style. While its popularity faded slightly over time, it exploded again in the early 2000s for its feminine, timeless appeal. Kitten heels are perfect for those who need a pair of cute heels and are afraid to try tall stilettos. But also, they round out any look that is classic and feminine.

Platform Heels

Platform heels have a bold, chunky aesthetic that can add significant height while being incredibly comfortable. Unlike traditional high heels, platform heels have a thicker sole that offsets some of the height of the heel, keeping your feet in a more natural, flat shape. This design offers better support and balance which makes them a practical statement shoe. Most heel styles can be made with a platform heel whether you prefer the look of casual sandals, strappy heels, or leather boots. Pair them with flared jeans for a retro-inspired vibe or a chic evening dress for an it-girl outfit.

Strappy Heels

Strappy heels are a sexier style characterized by a thin strap that wraps around the foot or ankle, usually with an open toe. The straps are mostly for decoration but can offer subtle support, especially when they clasp around the ankle. These heels are perfect for accentuating an elegant maxi dress or adding a touch of sophistication to a casual jeans outfit.

Slingback Heels

A slingback is any type of shoe with a strap that wraps around the back of your heel or ankle, instead of wrapping around the front of your foot. Slingback heels are another elegant, vintage-inspired shoe with many style varieties from open and closed toes and block heels to kitten heels. Many have a pointed toe that makes the foot look slim. Show off this style with a mini dress or wide leg pants.

Wedge Heels

Shoes and boots with a wedge heel are another comfortable option that gives you height. The sole spans the length of your foot, sloping from the heel to the ball of your foot. The effect distributes body weight more evenly and creates a stable base to reduce pressure on the front of the foot. Wedge heels have been embraced as a boho chic style—eclectic, free-spirited, and effortless. Pair wedges with a sundress, skinny jeans, or anything flowy and fringy.

Heeled Boots

Heeled boots are a go-to in colder weather—or anytime you want to dress up and cover up. Boots provide warmth by covering your feet, ankles, and legs while still elevating your outfit with a sophisticated look. From edgy ankle booties to sexy knee-highs, boots come in nearly every style out there. Ankle boots with a chunky heel or stiletto can add a modern edge to casual jeans, while thigh-high boots and a mini skirt have a feminine aura. Boots are usually made from durable materials like leather, suede, or synthetic blends.

Popular Colors and Materials

When it comes to choosing the perfect pair of heels, color and material can make all the difference. White or black heels are a timeless choice that is hard to style wrong. Plus, they both can transition from day to night look. Gold and silver hues have a more glamorous look, perfect for holidays and special occasions—really anytime you want to add sparkle and shine. For an understated elegance, nude heels might be your next go-to. It's best to have a pair for spontaneous nights out. Meanwhile, bold colors like red or pink inject personality and interest.

In terms of materials, leather is a classic, known for its durability and sleek appearance, while suede offers a softer, more textured finish. From glossy patent to subtle matte effects, the combination of color and material will affect the overall look.
