The Evolution of Slip Dresses

Slip dresses, otherwise known as camisole dresses, were originally meant to be worn as an undergarment to prevent outer layers from clinging to the body or revealing underwear lines. Over time, this practical piece has become a popular fashion trend and a staple in many women's wardrobes. Slip dresses are typically made from lightweight materials like satin or silk, and feature spaghetti straps, a loose and flowy silhouette, and often have lace or other decorative details. One of the most iconic features of slip dresses is a bias cut which allows the fabric to drape beautifully over curves. At Victoria’s Secret, we have a variety of slip dress styles to suit every occasion including sheer slips, lace trim slips, wedding-ready white slips, and more.

Slip Dress Varieties

Mini Slip Dress

A mini slip is a piece of lingerie that—when styled correctly—is totally appropriate to wear out and about. A mini is characterized by its shorter length, typically falling above the knee. This short style is perfect for showing off legs and maintains a classic and timeless appeal. Mini slip dresses are great for warmer weather when you want to stay cool and elegant, but it's easy to throw on stockings and tall boots to make a mini dress work in the winter. Try styling a mini slip dress with statement accessories like hoops and a simple purse.

Midi Slip Dress

A midi dress falls between the knee and ankle to strike a balance between fun night outs and more formal events. Its versatile length makes it a great choice for both day and evening outings. Thanks to its elongating silhouette, it adds the illusion of height. For a relaxed daytime look, pair it with a denim jacket and ankle boots; then switch to strappy heels and jewelry for a classy evening.

Maxi Slip Dress

A maxi slip is the best option for formal occasions or when you simply want to elevate your at-home lingerie look. This style has a floor-length hemline that gracefully drapes over the body, for a lengthening effect that enhances your natural silhouette from head to toe. From beach weddings to upscale dinners, maxi slip dresses provide an easy transition from day to night. For a casual outing, pair your maxi slip dress with flats and a wide-brimmed hat, and switch into tall boots and a clutch for a more polished evening.

Satin Slip Dress

Satin is probably what you picture when you think of a slip dress. The smooth and lustrous fabric has a glossy sheen that catches the light, fun for parties or special nights in. The fabric’s natural flow drapes seamlessly over the body for a very lightweight feel. Satin slip dresses are easy to dress up or down; layer a short sleeve t-shirt underneath and simple flats for a 90s-era look or add a leather jacket and tall boots for a more formal look. Satin pairs with many other fabrics, especially sequins and leather, so don't be afraid to combine your favorite accessories for a bold outfit.

Lace Slip Dress

A lace slip dress is a simple and feminine design that amplifies the lingerie aesthetic. A lace slip usually combines fabric like satin with lace cut outs or trim along the hem, neckline, and throughout the dress. Lace always adds a romantic feel with a touch of glamour. Plus, lace is lightweight which makes it more breathable and comfortable. If you're going out, pair a lace slip dress with a leather jacket and ankle boots for an edgy daytime outfit. Or add tights and tall boots for a sultry look.

Cotton Slip Dress

Known for breathability and comfort, cotton is a great choice for casual slip dresses, especially for sleep. The material's lightweight and soft quality makes it easy to move around in. Whether you're enjoying brunch with friends or spending the day in bed, cotton slip dresses are versatile. Look for our vibrant patterns, playful florals, and signature stripes to show off your personal style.

Popular Colors and Patterns for Every Occasion

A slip dress's charm lies in its simple cut, making it a great canvas for bright colors and patterns. Classic shades like black and white have a timeless look and serve as a perfect backdrop for bold jewelry and accessories. Red and pink are also classic colors, perfect for Valentine’s Day and the holiday season. In the springtime, try floral prints and paisley for a fresh, young energy. More patterns like polka dots, stripes, and even animal prints look great on slip dresses and for a unique outfit. In contrast, rich jewel tones like emerald or burgundy add depth for fall and winter events.

How to Style a Slip Dress

Lingerie slip dresses are a great choice for a special occasion or romantic evening at home. They can easily be worn as standalone pieces or paired with other lingerie like a sexy robe or lace thong. During the day, a slip dress styles easily with a denim jacket and sneakers for brunch or shopping. When transitioning to evening events, swap out casual accessories for a pair of high heels and jewelry to add a touch of glamour and sophistication. While slip dresses aren't business casual, you can make them modest for professional settings. Try a tailored blazer or chunky sweater for a clean appearance.

How to Style a Slip Dress for a Wedding

Slip dresses are perfect for brides because they can double as a reception look and bridal lingerie. A classic bridal slip is usually made from satin, with optional lace details for romantic charm. Pair your slip dress with delicate jewelry, like a simple pendant necklace and drop earrings which won’t overshadow the dress's flattering silhouette. A soft shawl can add warmth and more skin coverage during the event and complete your look with a pair of white or blue heels.

How to Wash a Lingerie Dress

Lingerie is delicate and requires special care when washing. Check the care label for specific recommendations. To hand wash, fill a basin or sink with cool water. Add an appropriate amount of soap—usually no more than a tablespoon. Let the item soak for 30 minutes or less and rinse until there is no more soap. Reshape your dress on a flat towel to dry.
