Sports Bras vs. Traditional Bras vs. Lounge Bras

All bras serve different purposes. Sports bras are specifically designed to manage movement and provide support during physical activities. Reducing breast bounce can prevent shoulder and back pain or discomfort associated with exercise. They often have moisture-wicking materials (except cotton bras) that move sweat from the inner layer to outer layers, so you stay dry and cool. In contrast, regular bras come in a variety of styles to complement different outfits, so you can lift or minimize the bust, go strapless, or choose a sexy look. Regular bras focus more on appearance and incorporate pretty elements like lace or mesh, while sports bras prioritize function with features like racerback straps and wide straps that distribute weight evenly for comfort. Lounge bras share similarities of both, combining the comfortable wide straps and wireless support of a sports bra, with the same fabrics of a regular bra. Ultimately, it's helpful to have all options, and always wear sports bras when exercising.

Understanding Different Levels of Support

The super-comfortable design of sports bras can create low, medium, or high levels of support, often called impact levels. VSX offers a full range of support levels to ensure every woman finds stability. Choose the right impact level to help with performance and comfort.

High Impact Sports Bras

High-impact sports bras have maximum support to minimize breast movement, which is crucial in preventing discomfort or potential damage to breast tissue during exercise. They accomplish this with features like wide, adjustable straps and a reinforced band that anchors the bra in place. Encapsulation sports bras have individual molded cups that hold each breast firmly in place. The breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics work by channeling sweat to the surface where it evaporates to keep you feeling dry. These fabrics are great for comfort and prevent skin irritation and breakouts caused by sweat build-up.

High Impact is Best For: Running, Jumping, HITT, Dancing, Sports

Low Impact Sports Bras

Let's get to the heart of it: what does "light support" or "low impact" truly mean when it comes to your sports bra? Think of these bras as your gentle, yet reliable, companions for activities where your body experiences minimal bounce or movement.

A low impact, or light support, sports bra is specifically engineered for activities where your feet generally stay on the ground, or the movements are smooth and controlled. The primary goal is to offer just enough compression and support to keep your breasts comfortably in place without feeling restrictive. This means less breast movement during less intensive workouts and activities. These sports bras are often characterized by their lightweight fabrics, flexible designs, and a focus on all-day wearability.

Low Impact is Best For: Stretching, Mobility, Yoga, Pilates, Light Hiking, Everyday Loungewear

Medium Support Sports Bras

A medium-impact sports bra is engineered to minimize bounce and provide comfortable stability for movements that are more dynamic than a walk in the park but less intense than, say, a sprint. It's all about providing that sweet spot of support for moderate activities without limiting your movement or making you feel overly compressed.

Medium Impact is Best For: Cycling, Pilates, Hiking, Weightlifting, Elliptical

Types of Sports Bras

Zip-Front Sports Bras

Designed with a front-zip or hook, our front-closure sports bras are ideal for easy on-and-off. These bras are great for anyone who has trouble putting a bra on over their head or traditional back-clasp bras. Many of our front-closure options have adjustable straps, so you can customize your fit. Whether you're training for a marathon or simply heading to a yoga class, there's a zip-front sports bra in fun colors and designs for you.

Push-Up Sports Bra

Push-up sports bras have a greater vertical lift for a more dramatic bust line. Push-up sports bras typically work with padded cups that create more support, especially for large breasts. They typically feature underwire or molded cups that not only lift and shape but also securely hold each breast in place, minimizing movement during exercise. This makes push-up sports bras an ideal option for low to medium-impact activities where style and comfort are equally important.

Longline Sports Bra

With an extended band that usually reaches just below the rib cage or abdomen, longline bras have a secure fit that stops the bra from riding up for an extra layer of comfort. With greater skin coverage, this style may feel more comfortable to wear alone as a top or under your favorite workout gear. Since longline bras give you support around the stomach and waist, they offer security.

Strappy Sports Bra

Add some style to your workout with strappy sports bras. Our collection includes a variety of silhouettes and colors to choose from, so you’ll always have a studio-to-street look to love. Strappy designs have a sleek look for a fun vibe at your next dance or cycling class. Pair with matching leggings or layered under your favorite top for a cute athletic look outside the gym.

Yoga Sports Bra

Find support for yoga with our low-impact sports bras. Designed in stretchy, breathable materials, these bras allow for a full range of motion and keep you comfortable during light physical activity. The stretchy, smooth fabrics conform to your body's movements for unrestricted motion during poses and transitions. The simple, clean design allows for proper alignment and balance.

Compression Sports Bra

Compression sports bras provide support with a snug fit that presses the breasts against the chest to minimize movement during physical activities. Compression bras are usually best for women with small to medium busts, for a variety of workouts from running to aerobics. Unlike encapsulation bras that use cups to hold each breast separately, compression sports bras have a single-panel design that distributes pressure evenly across the chest. Compression bras make use of quick-drying, moisture-wicking fabrics. Try our knit compression bras for the ultimate at-home lounge bra.

Racerback Sports Bra

Racerback sports bras have a unique strap design that forms a 'Y' or 'T' shape on the back for superior support. When the straps connect before meeting the band, it helps distribute weight more evenly across your shoulders and upper back, alleviating pressure points and decreasing strain. This type of comfort is best for large breasts when regular sports bras don't provide enough lift. Racerback straps are very common and easy to wear under your normal workout clothes. These straps are made to be seen.

Benefits of Wearing a Sports Bra

The biggest advantage of choosing a sports bra is it will reduce breast movement, which decreases the potential for experiencing discomfort or pain in the shoulders and back when you exercise. Sports bras are specifically engineered to provide the right amount of support needed for any intensity of workout, whether you prefer low-impact exercise like yoga or more vigorous exercises like running. They are also typically made with moisture-wicking materials, which help keep you dry by drawing sweat away from the body, reducing skin irritation, and preventing chafing. With the variety of styles to choose from—like racerback, longline, and zip-front—sports bras are not only functional but express personal style.

Sports Bras for All Body Types

Choosing the right sports bra for you offers better comfort and performance. For women with smaller breasts, compression bras might feel the best, providing good support with a snug fit that minimizes movement. On the other hand, those with broad chests often require sports bras that provide a more customized fit like encapsulation bras with structured support.

Sports Bras for Different Activities

Choosing the right sports bra for different activities keeps you focused and experiencing less discomfort and distraction.

For yoga or light-impact exercise, a light, flexible bra with gentle support will give you a full range of motion. Try VSX Featherweight™ Light Balconette Sports Bra.
Aerobic activities like cycling or dance benefit from medium-impact sports bras, reducing breast bounce while not feeling stiff. Try the VSX Angel™ Sports Bra.
Intense workouts like running require maximum bounce control. High-impact sports bras will have reinforced support systems to minimize movement and protect breast tissue. Try VSX Knockout™ Sports Bra for maximum support.

How to Wash Sports Bras

Maintaining the quality of your sports bras is easy when you follow these simple steps: Always read the care label before washing. Use a mild detergent and avoid using fabric softener. Put your bra in a lingerie bag and wash on a gentle cycle to prevent any snags or tears. Avoid using the dryer because heat weakens the elastic. Air dry instead.
